For the Protoulis family, hospitality has always been a family affair.
Founded in 1992 by the late Peter Protoulis, The Greek Fisherman is proud to have been one of the original restaurants established at Cape Town’s V&A Waterfront.
That legacy is carried forward today by Peter’s wife, owner Georgina Protoulis.
Our Heritage
For more than three decades, we have stayed true to the same recipe: honest food, generous Greek hospitality, and a table that always has room for one more.
Today, our regulars are known by name, our tables fill early and stay lively well into the night. There is a warmth and generosity here that feels less like a restaurant and more like a meal in a Greek family home.
In 2021, our family made the decision to move The Greek Fisherman to Sea Point, a neighbourhood that has embraced us as its own.
Today, we operate The Greek Fisherman alongside Kanéla Café from these premises.
Kanéla Café is conceptualised and run by Peter and Georgina’s children, Viron and Corina Protoulis. With a focus on mindful eating, Kanéla has become a place where the Sea Point community comes to work, meet, eat and play, a contemporary café shaped by a new generation and their way of seeing hospitality.

And the story continues.
In September 2026, the family introduced Kanéla on the Go, a spin-off from its big sister, to bring the Kanéla spirit to a new grab-and-go in Sea Point.
Operated by Micky Belfiore, another member of the family, continuing a tradition that has always been about more than restaurants, it’s about family, food and community.
While each of our restaurants has its own identity, the values behind them remain the same: quality, authenticity, generosity and treating every guest as part of the family.
It’s this respect for simplicity, quality, and authenticity that has remained at the heart of our cooking since 1992.
